EL PASO RHINOS 11, VALENCIA FLYERS 2

The Valencia Flyers were trampled by the El Paso Rhinos in their home opener. Both teams were looking to carry on the momentum from previous wins. El Paso forced an inflated result from last year’s meeting against Valencia when they won 4-1.

Niklas Ornmarker (3G-1A-4Pts.) had a hat-trick, Niklas Froden (1G-4A-5Pts.), Dominic Erdt (0G-4A-Pts.), and eight other Rhinos registered points. Nikita Garin (1G-1A-2Pts.), Leon Biller (1G) and Michael Onda (1A) were the only Flyers to have points.

The Flyers did well in getting the start they needed when they scored goal No. 1 at 16:10 of the first frame. Garin had a break away opportunity and didn’t waste the chance at a 1-0 start against El Paso. The energy generated from the opening goal wasn’t enough to tame the pressing Rhinos.  

A power play goal by Ornmarker at 12:47 was the entire spark needed to awaken the Rhinos. After Ornmarker’s goal, the Rhinos scored two more times to make it 3-1 before the Flyer’s Biller could get Valencia’s second goal while short handed. It was 3-2 going into the second but an exerted Flyers team was buried by six goals including a short-handed tuck by Ornmarker.

EL PASO 8, VALENCIA 1

Valencia was hoping to get on the board first like they did in Game 1, but it wasn’t so. The Rhinos broke the seal and exploded for six straight unanswered. Niklas Froden (3G) led with a hat-trick and Noah Janisch (2G) had two goals while five other Rhinos posted multiple points.

Lucas Demsar (1G), Nikita Garin (1A), and Leon Biller (1A) connected for the Flyer’s lone goal.

The Rhinos had one goal in the first and one goal in the second and closed out with a six goal third period performance. Rhino’s goalie, Sawyer Schmidt, had a light load as he only faced five shots in the first, four in the second and two in the third.

The Flyers could have used the scoring ability of Tristan Warr who was out of the lineup due to injury.

EL PASO RHINOS 7, VALENCIA FLYERS 0

The El Paso Rhinos couldn’t blank the Valencia Flyers in their series last year but were able to in the stretch game of this series. Originally slated for Friday, dangerous wild fires surrounding the Los Angeles county mountains forced the game to be postponed.

The game was played yesterday and the day off proved to be more beneficial for the Rhinos who won 7-0. Easton Easterson (2G-1A-2Pts.), Mark Kurliandchyk (1G-1A-2Pts.), Bobby Hathcock (2A), and Sebastian Jovicic (2A) each connected for multiple points. Jonathan Kornreder earned a shutout stopping 10 shots.

Kornreder’s save count is troubling for the Flyers who could have lost by a wider margin had it not been for the stellar performance of Flyer’s netminder, Brooks DiMarino. DiMarino did all that he could in stopping 43 shots but never had any help from his team who couldn’t generate enough offense to supplement his saves.

El Paso netted five goals in the first but then slowed down in the second and third only scoring two goals between the two latter periods.   

PUEBLO BULLS 16, WICHITA JR. THUNDER 1

 If the series between Pueblo and Dallas didn’t convince you that the Bulls are going to be a pesky team in the Midwest, then this one should have. The Bulls steamrolled the Jr. Thunder in their first meeting on route to a sweep of the 2017 Thorne Cup Champions.

The Jr. Thunder began the series on heavy legs as their seven hour road trip was prolonged because their bus broke down.

Ondrej Blaha (3G-3A-6Pts.) and Milan Breczko (3G) both had hat-tricks plus seven other Bulls put up multiple points. Of note, Blaha’s hat-trick is his second of the season and he led all skaters in this game with points.

Michael Power (1G) and Anton Frolin (1A) were the only players for Wichita to reflect on the scoresheet.

The Bulls’ first period at the Pueblo Ice Arena featured four goals by four different players. Although the Jr. Thunder outshot the Bulls in the opening frame, they couldn’t get past goalie Henry Denee who had 18 saves in the first for a game total of 36 saves.

Power Finally beat Denee at 17:19 of the second period but that was the only mistake by Denee in the night. The Bulls added seven goals in the second period and another five in the third.

PUEBLO BULLS 6, WICHITA JR. THUNDER 4

 The Jr. Thunder played a much more manageable game the second night. Although the Bulls still opened the scoring, Wichita was able to respond the first two times Pueblo came knocking but could not persist through the latter half of the game.

Anton Frolin (1G-1A-2Pts.) and Marcus Ohlsson-Ornelius (2A) led with two points and had help from Thomas Srsha (1G), Hunter Warner (1G), and Lukas Johansson with a goal each. Ondrej Blaha (2G) continued in the scoring department for the Bulls, as did Milan Breczko (1G).

Blaha’s first of the night got the scoring going at 18:50 of the first but the Jr. Thunder were able to respond with two of their own. Warner, at 13:06, and Johansson at 5:51 gave Wichita the temporary 2-1 lead. Brock McQuistan leveled the game for Pueblo at 4:43 and again, Wichita answered with two goals. A goal to close the first and another to open the second at 16:38 put Wichita back up 4-2.

Coincidental penalties were assessed midway through the game and Pueblo utilized the open ice to their advantage by tying the game for the second occasion at 11:38 of the second. Unfortunately for Wichita, they were unable to get back on the board as the Bulls started to widen the margin. Pueblo found two more goals through the middle frame and completed their scoring at 6:57 of the third to solidify the score line.     

PUEBLO BULLS 6 VS. WICHITA JR. THUNDER 2

The Wichita Jr. Thunder started the way they needed to by scoring two goals and gaining the 2-0 lead just under four minutes from the start.

Michael Steggall (1G) and Braeden Thomas (1G) each had the goals for Wichita and Thomas Srsha (1A), Tyler Landers (1A), Michael Power (1A) and Marcus Ohlsson-Ornelius (1A) all showed up again.

Despite being down two goals, Pueblo locked-it in and turned their game around to push for a perfect home opening series. Dixon Root got it going for Pueblo at 7:47 of the first on his first of three goals. Root had goals one, three and, five for a hat-trick, leaving Dane Whittet (1G-1A-2Pts.), Nic Pederson (1G-1A-2Pts.), and Ondrej Blaha (1G) with the rest of the goals. 

Goaltender Sean Meier made 37 saves and was a brick wall after he let the first two in. With the win, Pueblo completes its first sweep in team history.  

 MEADOW LAKE MUSTANGS 6, COLD LAKE HORNETS 4

An even first period gave way to a dominant latter half by Meadow Lake who scored four in the third.

 The Meadow Lake Mustangs got their season started on a positive note finding the 6-4 win over division opponent Cold Lake Hornets. The Hornet’s inability to get pucks on net was the ultimate knock on their efforts to find their first win; They only had four shots in the first, six in the second and a game high of eight in the third period. Conversely, Meadow Lake had 16 shots in the first and 19 in each of the remaining frames forcing Riley Tucker to make 54 total saves. 

Justin Hebert (1G-3A-4Pts.), Ostin Fontain (1G-1A-2Pts.), and Erik Ehrmantraut (1G-1A-2Pts.) had multiple points for the Mustangs and Peter Willier (2G) led in goals. Four different players found the back of the net for the Hornets who were much improved this weekend. Terrel Hood (1G-1A-2Pts.) and Riley Smith (2A) were the only skaters with multiple points among five other skaters with a point for the Hornets.

The Mustangs built a 2-0 lead on goals by Fontaine at 18:42 and Willier at 13:35. Unlike last week, the Hornets didn’t fall into a hole and actually punched back with two quick goals from Dawson Nelson (1G) and Yauheni Lavrov (1G) before the first ended. 

Pueblo scored a little over 10 seconds into the final period before completely taking control of the game. Though Wichita got on the board two more times the deficit was too much. 

OGDEN MUSTANGS 7, STEAMBOAT WRANGLERS 1

 The Ogden Mustangs continued to grow their win column count with three strong wins over the Steamboat Wranglers. Oliver Wieringa (3G-1A-4Pts.) scored his second hat-trick of the season, Gleb Krivoshapkin (2G-2A-4Pts.), and Shane Gilbert (4A-4Pts.) both had four points but weren’t the only ones to have multiple points for Ogden.

J.D. Woods (1G) and Daniel Kempers (1A) are the only registered point getters for the Wranglers in this game. 

OGDEN MUSTANGS 17, STEAMBOAT WRANGLERS 2

 The Mustangs completely overpowered a Steamboat side that couldn’t find their rhythm all night. Scoring was spread across the Ogden roster as 16 skaters had points; Shane Gilbert (1G-5A-6Pts.) notched career high six points in a game.

Ogden scored six goals in the first period, added four in the second, and finished with seven in the third leaving the Wranglers without any life. Steamboat was simply outmatched and overpowered. This marks Ogden’s biggest victory by margin in their series with Steamboat dating back to last season. The Wranglers have never been able to score more than two goals on Ogden.

Krivoshapkin sparked the goals for Ogden at 12:08 of the first period quickly followed by Wieringa’s first. Steamboat found their first of two goals to end the first period at 2:43. After another Ogden Goal to begin the second, Wranglers scored for the second time at 14:17.

Blake Reinert tried his best in making 62 saves before he got pulled for Hunter Gallagher. 

OGDEN MUSTANGS 14, STEAMBOAT WRANGLERS 1

 An ideal start and strong third period saw the Ogden Mustangs smother the Wranglers for a third consecutive time. This go around, Ogden had 14 players with points with Bryson Bartell (4G-3A-6Pts.) and Zach Pires (3G-3A-6Pts.) each scoring a hat-trick.  

After Ogden started with the 2-0 lead, Steamboat worked toward an answer and ultimately scored at 14:39 of the first period for the first and final time. Ogden was never flustered by the quick response that came within moments of their second goal.

The Mustangs opened the floodgates, per usual, and added 12 goals through out the duration of the game to saturate the lead. The Wranglers were suffocated and unable to put up the necessary shots to find success.

Ogden’s mentality never let them take their foot off the pedal taking scoring until the final seconds of the game.

HINTON TIMBERWOLVES 11, BARRHEAD BOMBERS 1

 The Hinton Timberwolves are toward the beginning of an eight game home stand—their longest home stand of the season. They welcomed the Barrhead Bombers to the Murray Rec Center where a very well managed game saw to the Bomber’s worst loss in recent years.

Hat-Tricks from Jamahl Eakett (3G-4A-7Pts.) and Dimitri Buttazzoni (3G-1A-4Pts.) boasted Hinton’s standout players and nine additional skaters registered points. The lone scorer for Barrhead was Stran Backfat Redcrow (1G) assisted by Raf Lambert Dodginghorse (1A) and Dmitro Kobylnyk (1A).

Hinton had the Bombers on their heels. Danylo Makarenko suffered a minor injury after one period but the back up, Brandon Lakusta, took his place in the second period before Makarenko felt better and was put back in.

Hinton started with an unassisted goal by Jacob Arsenault (1G-1A) at 14:10 of the first. They scored all 10 remaining goals by the 17:45 mark of the third period until the Bombers finally registered their first at 4:59 of the third, by Redcrow. 

The Bombers packed it in and regrouped for the following night when they put forth a stronger effort.

HINTON TIMBERWOLVES 5, BARRHEAD BOMBERS 2

 A stronger game defensively from Barrhead made for a closer game though Hinton still won with particular ease. The Bombers found themselves playing from behind again but put up ten more shots than the previous night.

Jamahl Eakett (2G-1A-3Pts.) again led all skaters and Dimitri Buttazoni and Jakob Arsenault had goals for the second night in a row for Hinton.

The Bombers saw higher work ethic from Mykyta Protsenko (2A), Carter Zawortny (1A), and Serhii Poimanov (1G) while Dodginghorse and Redcrow each reflected on the scoresheet once again.

Only Hinton was able to score in the first period on goals by three different players. Dorian Hall made it 4-0 to start the second frame tasking Barrhead with a comeback if they want a positive result. The Bombers scored two goals in the third period by Dodginghorse and Poimanov at 4:06 and 3:51 respectively but that exhausted their scoring for the night.

Eakett added the insurance goal and scored his second with 19 seconds left in the game.   

HINTON TIMBERWOLVES 3, EDSON AEROS 6

 Picking up where they left off last week, the Aeros won the tiebreaker in the series thus far. The two teams started their seasons on a home-and-home series split, and played each other for the third time on Sunday. A dominant first period by the Aeros was enough to give them the cushion they needed to hold on for the win.

Keep in mind, Edson only had one game this past weekend compared to Hinton who played twice against Barrhead.

The Aeros won by the same score as they did in their first game of the season, 6-3. Maverick Baxtrom (1G-3A-4Pts.) and Matthew Rathbone (1G-4A-5Pts.) both had at least four points with Kevin Lundin (1G-1A-2Pts.) registering multiple points.

Lundin and Rathbone both scored for Edson on Oct. 4 to beat Hinton. Jamahl Eaket  (1G-1A-2Pts.) has consistently shown for the Timberwolves and continued with two points on Sunday, along with Dimitri Buttazoni (1G-1A-2Pts.).

The Aeros got it going with a goal from Vojtech Svoboda (1G) at 15:56 of the first stanza and then amassed the 5-0 lead by 15:50 of the second stanza on a goal from Baxtrom. The game was essentially iced by then even though Hinton still had a say on the board.

Buttazzoni and Eakett scored for Hinton at 10:11 and 7:25 of the third with Brendan Auger assisting both of them. The scoring moves could not propel Hinton as it was far too late.

NORTHERN COLORADO EAGLES 2, DALLAS SNIPERS 1

The Dallas Snipers took to the Greeley Ice House to face the Northern Colorado Eagles for three games. The evenly matched series proved to be nothing short of a battle. A single goal in each period highlights the opening game of this three game swing.

Dawson Grebinski (1G) and Jacob Elik had one goal for Northern Colorado and Bradley Richardson had the lone tally for Dallas. Grebinski netted the game-winner at 13:12 of the third period after Elik tied it in the second period. Richardson, for Dallas, lit the lamp first at 12:50 of the opening period.

Both goalies were rather busy as Marshall Murphy made 40 saves to earn his fourth win of the season and Alexander Aleshkin made 37 of 39 stops.

The Eagles continue to earn wins against divisional rivals winning out their second series of the season so far. The Snipers have the extra series at hand having been one of two teams to start at the end of September but have endured a sweep already—to El Paso.

NORTHERN COLORADO 4, DALLAS SNIPERS 5

 The Snipers put up more shots in Game 2 and it showed in the score line. The Snipers were able to steal a road win after a hard fought 60-minute effort. Alexsey Syrotenko (2G-1A-3Pts.) and Michael Fatta (2G) had two goals to lead the scoring department while Dmitri Khalin (2A), and Jesper Lundqvist (2A) also added two points.

Four different players scored goals for the Eagles including Dawson Grebinski (1G), Tyler Trombly (1G), Eric Hildebrand (1G-1A), and Kaden Whaley (1G).

The Eagles and Snipers got off to a very close first period as shots were almost even and only one goal was scored. Arvidas Domeika (1G) scored the night’s first goal. Dallas began to get more shots on net, 17-8, in the second to be exact, and Domeika found the second goal of the night for Dallas at 17:33. The Eagles didn’t fall behind and came back to tie the game with goals from Trombly and Grebinski at 13:03 and 9:35. The Snipers regained the lead shortly thereafter setting up more back-and-forth action as the Eagles began to regain their shot count toward the second half of the game.

Toward the end of the second period, the Eagles took their first lead of the game at 4:36 on Kaden Whaley’s goal. They successfully swung the score around but they didn’t capitalize on efforts to extend the lead leaving room for a Snipers comeback.

After leading all game, persisting through tie scores, and outshooting the Eagles, the Snipers completed their final task with two goals from Fatta at 2:44 of the second and the game-winner at 14:06 of the third.  

NORTHERN COLORADO EAGLES 5, DALLAS SNIPERS 3

 The Eagles were able to escape the series with two wins and one loss as they were able to mitigate every Dallas response in this game. A stronger second and third period by the Eagles secured their second win in three days.

Jacob Elik (1G-4A-5Pts.) tied his career high of five points in a game and John Campbell (2G), Brennan McFarland (2A) had two goals a piece to head the Eagles. Alexsey Syrotenko (1G-1A-2Pts.) was the only Sniper with at least two points and Domeika (1G) had the only other goal for Dallas. 

The Snipers got on the board first in all three games but the Eagles took it with a grain of salt and flew through adversity. After Dmitri Khalin (1G) scored the first goal of the game for Dallas, the Eagles came back and scored two times on the efforts of Evan Wammes (1G) and Campbell to make it 2-1.

The next four goals were traded between the teams leaving the Eagles on top 4-3 with 12:37 to go—McMahon’s game-winner. Northern Colorado eventually sealed the deal with their fifth goal scored by Elik.

SEATTLE TOTEMS 6, BELLINGHAM BLAZERS 2

 It took the Seattle Totems and Bellingham Blazers until the last two regular season games last year to determine who was No. 1. Well, the Totems can safely say they have the series lead, so far, this season. The Totems took all six points from the Blazers who were pushed to the limit.

It was the Cameron Waisman (5G) show as he scored career high five goals and tied his career high of five points in a game. Waisman had one in the first and one in the second and then scored three in the third period. Daniel Modin (1G) scored his first WSHL goal and first as a Totem.

The Blazers had contribution from Milo Schneidmiller (1G-1A) and Seth Hebert (1G) along with John Macdonald (1A) and Daniel Hebert (1A).

Seattle got off to the 3-0 lead at the Olympicview Arena before the Blazers found their first goal by Hebert at 10:22 of the second period. Sandwiched between three Waisman goals, Schneidmiller made it two for Bellingham who couldn’t find their scoring touch all series.    

SEATTLE TOTEMS 8, BELLINGHAM BLAZERS 0

 It is rare to see the high scoring Bellingham Blazers be shut out at home, but the Totems did it their first try. As already mentioned in the previous game, Bellingham struggled to find their scoring touch and it desperately needed to make a showing last night—it did not.

Daniil Goryachev stopped all 57 shots he faced to earn his first shutout and blank Bellingham at home while seven different Totems rippled the mesh. Cameron Waisman (2G-1A), Ricky Bredberg (1G-2A) and 12 other players for Seattle earned points in the match.

The first period was scoreless but the Totems scored five of eight goals in the second and three in the third to extinguish the Blazers. Bellingham put up 46 shots but could not solve the goaltending of Goryachev and his perfect night. 

Las Vegas Thunderbirds 4, Fresno Monsters 3

The Las Vegas Thunderbirds continued their domination of the Fresno Monsters earning a sweep again. 

Owen Webster (2G-1A) lead the T-Birds in scoring and a total of six players for Vegas aided in the triumph including Emil Svartbro (1G) and Anthony Rodriguez (1G). The Monsters had their fair share of contributors. Leading was Turpin with his two goals and one assist along with Jackson Bauml (1G), Ty Wright (2A), and George Leech (1A), and William Markstedt (1A).

 Fresno connected twice in the first period on goals by Zackory Turpin at 16:52 and 13:54. Although the Monsters won the first period, the Thunderbirds were also able to score with an unassisted goal from Captain Anthony Rodriguez.

The second half of the game, beginning with the second period, proved to be much more fruitful for Vegas who saw the net in quick succession with goals from Svartbro and Webster at 15:13 and 14:40. Skating with the deficit, the Monsters continued to look for opportunities and finally got a goal to tie it 3-3 at 3:20 of the second from Bauml. 

Webster was responsible for the game-winner some time after that at 8:26 of the third period leaving the Thunderbirds to a perfect 4-0-0-0 start against the Monsters. The two teams won't play again until January in Fresno.
